"Pata-design Post-50%"
Søren Rosenbak
My research concerns the prototyping of a pataphysically infused
critical design practice (what I've come to refer to as
pata-design). In this seminar, I'll pick up some of the key
discussion points from my 50% seminar in June 2016, in order
to sketch out future research trajectories for the year ahead. In
this way, I hope to have an informal discussion about ways to move
forward. Hope to see you there!

"Critical and feminist design of intimate interactions"
Marie-Louise Juul Søndergaard
This presentation focuses on intimacy and intimate interactions
as a framework for understanding the complex relation between
material bodies and social, cultural and technological
infrastructures. It questions what a particular focus on intimacy
may bring in design speculations on preferable futures? Can we use
intimacy, and the fragile relation of pain and pleasure, of taboos,
vulnerability and darkness, as a means to design? What happens to
the understanding and practice of design, if we view users as
irrational, contradictory and unpredictable subjects, and question
design's inherent logic of designing products for a happier,
brighter and better future?
In this presentation I introduce my PhD project as a preliminary
study of intimate interactions by focusing on two aspects of
intimacy, namely that of menstruation and sex technologies. I
present two design experiments that I have made as part of my PhD
project, and some future concerns and speculations on how to
facilitate spaces for debate on preferable intimate futures.

"Temperatures of openness"
Aditya Pawar
This experiment aims at understanding openness in more than
verbal and visual means -through movement. The question I am
interested in is - Can movement (dancers bodies) be a way to sense,
understand and express socio-political qualities of open spaces?
the site(s) chosen for these experiments are semi-public spaces
such as the cafeteria of the Open-lab (KTH, Stockholm), Common
areas of Sliperiet (Umeå) and the Umeå public library. In these
experimental sessions, the performers go through a cycle of steps
to sensitize themselves to space, use movement-scores (set of
movements) to align themselves with the everyday mundane activities
around them and end with a score that interrupts the space in some
way. Each cycle ends with joint reflections on the question above.
This is in brief, what I would be presenting with the help of
pictures, film and anecdotes. This work is in collaboration
with NOMODACO, a contemporary dance collective from
Umeå.

"Framing Interaction Design Education and Research Through the Lens
of Digital Form-Making"
Heekyoung Jung
Assistant Professor, School of Design, University of
Cincinnati
Interaction design, as an interdisciplinary practice, involves
various learning objectives and pedagogical approaches for creative
form-making with emerging technologies as design tools and
materials. Based on a theoretical foundation about digital form and
materiality, this presentation will showcase the processes and
outcomes from interaction design studio courses offered in the
School of Design at University of Cincinnati. Focused learning
objectives include the mastery of systemic form-making skills and
principles; the understanding of collaborative and strategic design
processes; and the development of creative and critical thinking
capabilities through design. The (dis)connections among these
learning objectives will be discussed to frame out integrated
approaches to digital form-making practice, which consist of
incremental design development, radical design exploration, and
critical inquiry through design. The talk will conclude by
speculating about constructive relationship between interaction
design education and research to make sense of and intervene in
emerging social, cultural, and technological issues.

"UNFLATTENING: Art of scripting and diagramming research"
Aditya Pawar
The term scripting is not new to the design community and was
first introduce when describing schema (Schank & Abelson,
1975) whereby a script was explained as "a structure
that describes an appropriate sequence of events in a
particular context ... a script is a predetermined,
stereotyped sequence of actions that define a well-known
situation". Think of the the double-diamond script
(discover-define-develop-deliver) typical of describing a design
process. It can also be said that artifacts naturally hold a
type of script that the designer relates with on an everyday
basis. However, in research through design the designer along
with others (human/non-humans) engages in script-making that cannot
be predetermined but is emergent and leads to decision making
on the go. This PhD seminar proposed to re-emphasis this often
implicit process of script-making (and diagramming) as a
reflective skill for the design researcher.
The seminar will take the form of a presentation and a short
individual reflection-exercise. For the reflection-exercise, it
would be best if you bring with you a research-project you are
having a hard time formulating or articulating.
Even if you do not have an ongoing research project you are
welcome to join. The seminar requires you to read a 2-page
article 'THE FUTURE IS TODAY. Scripting public debate on Design
Anthropological encounters' (accessible online at: http://bit.ly/1PUkbuN).
P.S. The seminar's title has been borrowed from the
book Unflattening by Nick Sousanis.

Recent years has seen an increase in portable and mobile
devices and correspondingly device related accidents have also been
on the rise. This seminar is about the investigation of alternative
methods using design research methodologies to push or pull

"HYBRID MATTERs"
Kristina Lindström and Åsa Ståhl
ABSTRACT:
In HYBRID MATTERs we invite to a series of walks as a form for
public engagement with science and technology (PEST) (cf. Lindström
and Ståhl 2014, Michael 2012, Barry and Born 2013, Kerridge 2009,
Gabrys n.d.). Together with the participants, human and nonhuman,
we explore emerging hybrid matters in a digital, postindustrial and
anthropocene era. Matters is meant to have at least a double
meaning, pointing both to materialities and to issues.
During early August 2015 plastiglomerate walks were arranged in
Iceland, where we took the article "An anthropogenetic marker
horizon in the future rock record" by geologists Corcoran et al
(2014) as our starting point. In this article they coined the term
plastiglomerates for, what they call, a new geological entity
consisting of basalt, plastic, corrals and more. We have taken the
plastiglomerates as an example of a hybrid matter.
In this seminar we want to discuss how to continue in this
explorative phase, where some key words for us are foraging
(searching for and collecting what is not deliberately cultivated -
in an expanded sense and not only connected to food), making and
unmaking (interventions) and using (how to co-live with this new
entity) as well as intentional and unintentional design.
This research is part of our postdoc at the UID and is a
collaboration with, amongst others, Finnish bioart society, the
ITU, MAH, and Nikolai Kunsthall. Financed by the Nordic culture
fund.
