From African slums to Cargo Efficiency - the UID
Winners
Malaika is the 2017 degree project of Rebecca Daum, who
last year graduated from the Master's programme in Advance Product
Design. Her concept, Malaika, is a reaction to extensive research
and insights gained from on-site visits to fire brigades and slum
communities in South Africa and Kenya. Malaika provides a product,
a service and a sustainable business model that empowers slum
communities and the women responsible for creating homes and
keeping their children safe there. Malaika provides functions of a
smoke detector, access alarm and a panic alarm that will help make
even the simplest of homes and communities safer.
Elias Pfuner's project, N-9 / autonomous empty container
handler, won top prize in the Commercial Equipment Award
category. The concept answers the question; How can we make empty
container handling more efficient and at the same time increase
safety? The product itself is an innovative autonomous empty
container handler. It stacks containers from the bottom up instead
of the top down. This drastically increases the container
throughput and time efficiency. An automated robotic twist lock
system is built-in, allowing for the stacking of up to 9
containers.
