Simon Larsson graduated form the Bachelor programme in
industrial design 2015. His thesis project, the ABT (Autonomous
Baggage Train), has been chosen as one of the winners in the Spark
Awards 2015 Transport category.
The ABT (Autonomous Baggage Train) is designed for transporting
bags between the airport terminals and the airplanes and has the
ability to load/unload the baggage with no manual handling needed.
It removes 4 of the 6 manual lifting moments, shortens the waiting
time for the passengers, reduces the wear on both baggage and the
airport's baggage bands and contributes to a safer working
The 10 week long thesis project was made in collaboration with
Swedavia, TYA (Transportfackens Yrkes- och Arbetsmiljönämnd) and
- Through my partners I have been able to spend relatively much
time with baggage workers and people higher up in the hierarchy and
I have received surprisingly positive feedback on my ideas from the
leading groups of people in Sweden within this area. Swedavia are
still interested in the concept and therefore there is a chance
that the ABT could become reality, says Simon.
Simon Larsson is now working at the ÅF design studio in
Gothenburg. To get more information about the project, contact him
