CAID2 for TD

Time to 3D Design and prototype!

  This 3-point course is in the first year of Master and is a part of "Advanced Computer Aided Modeling and Visualization". (The other part is CAD)

The CAID program used is Autodesk Alias Automotive on Windows based workstations.

Goal and contents

Students are given training in CAID on a deeper level in order to be able to create advanced 3D models and make effective visualizations.

The aim is to give a more in depth knowledge of the tools in a CAID program.

 

Concepts covered:

Understand the different modeling strategies available to maximize modeling efficiency.
Determine the softwares role in the design workflow.
Customize construction tolerances and linear units.
Construct efficient curves with optimal parameterization and minimal geometry
Define G0, G1, and G2 continuity and the importance of each to curve and surface construction
Manipulate curves using the tools found in the curve edit palette
Understand the criteria for primary and transitional surfaces
Construct primary surfaces using the set planar, revolve, skin, extrude and monorail surfacing tools

Construct transitional surfaces using birail, square, fillet and round
Understand when and where the options related to continuity and rebuilding of surfaces should be applied
Edit surfaces using freeform CV pulling and precise manipulation methods

Evaluate curves and surfaces to ensure desired curvature and continuity characteristics.  Create stitched models for Boolean operations or output to solid modeling packages


Understand the process of data transfer as it relates to their designs to other CAD systems. An overview of the merits and limitations of various file transfer formats (i.e.: IGES, STEP etc.), tips and traps will be provided
Prepare models for successful rapid prototyping output

 

Prerequisites

Completion of CAID 1

Form of tuition

Tuition is in the form of lectures and practical training under the supervision of tutor. In the computer lab, exercises will be carried out under the guidance of authorized teacher. All sections in the course are obligatory.

Examination form and marks

Examination is in the form of individual practical tests and presentation of results of the given exercises at the school.

In order to obtain credit for the 3-points course, all sections and assignments must be successfully completed. Students receive a mark of either Pass or Fail for each assignment and section. For those students who do not receive a mark of pass, another opportunity is provided to pass the assignment or examination after a period of time.

Preparing your 3D-model for CNC Milling

Here some steps:

  1. 1:1 scale in millimeter [mm]
  2. IGES igs, STEP stp (and occasionally OBJ or STL)
  3. Single file (can have multiple parts!)
  4. Small Gaps.  If smaller than the milling tool (8 mm dia.) then it's ok.
  5. Clean file only export surfaces (occasionally curves as well)
  6. Import it again and check it again!

YES! you can have gaps when milling. :)

Gaps need to be smaller than the milling tool

 

Assignment #1 Milling

  • STEP or IGES (STL)
    Export Milling files (normally step or iges) and pictures showing the objects position in XYZ-space.
  • Model
    Use an old model from CAID1 or your own 3D-model. Maybe download a 3D-file.
  • Size
    The model must enclose a volume with the height of 40mm and about 110 x 70 (the size of a computer mouse)

 Upload

  • Alias wire-file
  • A milling file STEP or IGES (occasionally STL)
  • Image  showing the models position on the Grid

Export a Rapid Prototyping (stl)    file(s). Renderings and pictures from NetFabb basic (free) showing;

  • it is a "leakage free" model
  • contains only one volume
  • No borders
  • Real life scanned data has to be used and
  • combined in with other geometry in some way. Photo, laser or IPad-scanner, downloaded files and your own models could be used
