Admissions to MFA in Interaction Design

 General facts

About 10-12 students are admitted to the programme every year, plus 2 exchange students may be accepted for one or two semesters.

Admission is based on applicant's documentation, portfolio (first stage) and a video assignment (second stage).

The programme is taught in English.

Tuition fees are covered by Swedish government grants for EU citizens. Scholarships are available for non EU students. Learn more about tuition and scholarship for non EU citizens.

Bachelor's degree, in industrial design or equivalent subject area which should include at least 60 ECTS credits in the Design subject + Portfolio.
Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6. Read More.

Application step by step  

Step 1: Find the programme through the search function at the on-line application service Follow the instructions!  All documents should be uploaded or sent to University Admissions,  except portfolio and motivation letter, which is sent directly to Umeå Institute of Design. Important: keep your personal application number for further steps.

Work samples should present applicant's strengths in a visually concise manner. However, one or two of the submitted works samples can describe in detail what kind of design process was used. We prefer that you submit a link to your on-line portfolio. If you do not have an on-line portfolio, please submit a PDF. Note that no printed portfolios/ physical media (CD, DVD, USB-stick) will be accepted.

Deadline for application fee:
If you are non EU citizen, pay the application fee of 900 SEK.
If you are EU/EEA citizen, submit the documentation of your citizenship status to confirm that you do not need to pay application or tuition fees. Read more.

Portfolio requirements

  • 8-12 samples of your work, showing your present creative and aesthetic design experience and capabilities on professional and/or academic level. You can include videos, photos, sketches, 3D renderings, graphics, or interactive presentations to demonstrate your design skills.

  • Keep the presentation of each work sample to one page each and select the parts that best presents your strengths. However, one or two of the submitted work samples should be decribed in more detail over 3-4 pages, where your design process should be in focus.
    For each work sample, include a short text (10-20 words) describing the content and context of the shown project. In group projects, tell us what your contribution was.

Selection process

The selection process based on the applicant´s portfolio is done in two steps. In the first step about 20-30 applications are shortlisted by the recruitment group. Shortlisting is based solely on the talent displayed in the portfolios. Applicants who are shortlisted to the second part of the selection process might be given a creative assignment as preparation for the final interview.
